Get in touchExpertise
BrainDx provides specialist interpretation and consultation in brain FDG-PET imaging, with a particular focus on neurodegenerative disease.
More than pattern recognition
Brain FDG-PET provides a functional representation of cerebral glucose metabolism. Characteristic patterns of hypometabolism can provide information about the presence, distribution and nature of neuronal dysfunction.
Age-related changes, atrophy, vascular disease, medication, metabolic conditions, technical factors and overlapping disease patterns can all influence the appearance of a scan. Quantitative analysis can support interpretation, but requires appropriate processing and careful correlation with the original PET images and structural imaging.
Alzheimer disease and atypical phenotypes including PCA and lvPPA; frontotemporal dementia and language presentations; dementia with Lewy bodies; corticobasal syndromes; and complex or overlapping patterns.
FDG patterns associated with PSP, corticobasal degeneration or syndrome and other atypical parkinsonian disorders, including evolving phenotypes and difficult differentiation.
Expert assessment for atypical, subtle, asymmetric or discordant findings, broad differential diagnoses and cases complicated by atrophy or comorbidity.
Difficult cases
Difficult cases are often where FDG-PET matters most. The differential diagnosis may extend beyond the most familiar patterns and include atypical neurodegenerative disorders or alternative neurological processes.
Atypical or non-straightforward presentations
Subtle, asymmetric or unusual findings
Overlapping disease patterns
Structural changes complicating interpretation
Discordant imaging and clinical information
Uncertainty about neurodegenerative versus alternative causes
Quality starts before reporting
Patient preparation, glucose levels, stimulation, positioning, movement and acquisition can influence cerebral FDG distribution and image quality. BrainDx can advise on protocols, processing and optimisation for expert interpretation.
